HER Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha bestowed kurnia peribadi or personal gifts to a total of 7,676 infants and single mothers yesterday in ceremonies held concurrently throughout the nation.
The ceremonies, held for the first time, saw 1,241 single mothers registered at Community Development Department (Japem) and the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (Muib) receiving the gifts.
The other 6,435 recipients consisted of infants born between October 7, 2009 and October 7, 2010.
The kurnia peribadi was given to both Muslim and non-Muslim recipients and also to expatriates residing in the country.
The royal gifts were of financial assistance and would be in the form of bank saving accounts to foster a saving culture, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
Just three months after the sons of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam represented the monarch in handing out his kurnia peribadi to underprivileged families in the country, six princesses represented Her Majesty at yesterday's ceremonies.
Concurrent ceremonies in all four districts of the country started at exactly 10am.
Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah and Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah represented Her Majesty in bestowing the personal gifts at Istana Nurul Iman.
The royal sisters presented the gifts to 864 single mothers and 4,548 infants in Brunei-Muara District.
The recipients were all smiles as they lined up and made their way into a designated main area at the palace where the princesses handed over the gifts and briefly chatted with them.
At the Istana, blue tags were issued for mothers with babies while red cards for single mothers. The green and orange tags were also given to recipients in the districts of Belait and Temburong while only orange tags were handed out in Tutong.
Prior to receiving the gifts, the guests waited at the Istana's reception halls and were treated to a sumptuous feast of Western and Asian dishes.
Cries of babies mixed with the laughters of the adults could be heard as parents anxiously waited for their infants' first meeting with the royal family. Some of the husbands waited at the sidelines while some lined-up with wives and their babies to meet the princesses.
Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Majeedah Nuurul Bolkiah and Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Hafizah Sururul Bulqiah, both as personal representatives of Her Majesty, presented the royal gifts to 171 single mothers and 951 infants in a similar handover ceremony at Hall of the Officers' Mess, Third Battalion, Lumut Camp in Belait District. The main doors of the hall where the ceremony was held were closed at 9.45am and were only opened for mothers wishing to breastfeed and change the diapers of their babies. The princesses arrived on board a helicopter.
Fathers and other relatives of the recipients were seen waiting outside under the tents set up on the main ground.
Most of the non-Muslim wives who received the royal gifts were spouses of Nepali Gurkhas working at the British Garrison. Female soldiers were also seen carrying babies to give the tired mothers time to rest their arms. Buffet tables were also set up for the enjoyment of the guests.
In Tutong district, a total of 919 recipients received the personal gifts during a ceremony that took place at the Tutong Community Hall.
Gracing the ceremony was Her Royal Highness Princess 'Azemah Ni'matul Bolkiah, who distributed the gifts to 148 single mothers and 771 infants in the district.
Due to the hot weather, it was stifling inside the hall thus mothers were seen using fans to calm their crying babies.
Red Crescent Society members were all over the ceremony site ready to give first aid and help elderly people.
Some fathers were also seen accepting the gift on behalf of their children. The ceremony in Tutong ended around noon.
Tents were set up outside the Tutong community hall where food and free-flowing fountain of refreshing drinks were served. Recipients in Temburong also shared the jubilation of getting Her Majesty's kurnia peribadi as Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah came down to the district aboard a helicopter and handed over the royal gifts to 58 single mothers and 165 infants.
The ceremony took place at the Belalong Hall in Bangar Town where the hall was divided into two sections, one for the women while the other side was for the men. The ceremony lasted up to 11.30am. Goody bags and chocolate drinks were given to all recipients in all four districts.
